Irving: Walters 'acting' like he's already in charge
He may or may not be the permanent General manager when the Winnipeg Blue bombers get their administrative house in order at the end of this season but the Bombers "acting" GM Kyle Walters continues to make personnel moves aimed at improving the club.Last Sunday's trade of all-star pass-rush specialist Alex Hall doesn't exactly rate as a stoke of genius, but it is certainly a prudent and pro-active move with a player who had made it clear he was going to explore the free agent market, specifically south of the border,Wholesale NFL Jerseys, at the end of the sesaon. It's also a concession that any playoff hopes the Bombers still had went completely out the window when they were downed 38-11 in Calgary on Saturday (Note: The Bombers are still "mathematically" alive. They would have to win their final 4 games and have Montreal lose its final 4 to make it).In return for Hall the Blue bombers got a 24-year old Canadian offensive lineman in Patrick Neufeld who should still have significant upside. Neufeld has started a number of games for the Riders. He dealt running back Anthony Woodson - also headed for free agency - to Toronto for offensive lineman Marc Parenteau, and he sent quarterback Buck Pierce to BC for Canadian receiver Akeem Foster.Walters is in his first year at the managerial level. He was named Assistant GM and Director of Canadian scouting earlier this year after three seasons as Winnipeg's special teams coach. Prior to that he was head coach at the University of Guelph for four seasons. The move into coaching followed a playing career that saw Walters enjoy a sparkling college career at Guelph before a solid CFL career with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Assuming acting Bomber CEO Wade Miller has the "acting" tag removed from his title, he will no doubt conduct the proper due diligence and go through a thorough search for a General Manager.Given his deep background in CIS football and his playing and coaching experience at the pro level, Walters has the kind of credentials that will make him a prime candiate to get the job on a permanent basis. In the meantime, Walters is "acting" like he is already in charge.
